The following equipment was purchased some time ago for sharing among groups of Early Years Nursery, and other Pre-School settings as part of the Scottish Borders ICT Early Years ICT Strategy.

What is this equipment ? 
Sony DSC-P43 Cybershot Digital Camera with Smart Zoom, Real Imaging Processor, takes short MPEG movies. built-in microphone, re-chargeable batteries and charger with mains lead, 16MB memory stick supplied.

What is this equipment ?
Hewlett Packard P7960 Photo Printer.  Accommodates memory sticks from a variety of different digital camera types. No computer connection required. Take the memory stick from the camera and insert into the printer for fast transfer and printing of photos in sizes, amounts of your choice.

The rate at which digital cameras are developing, with new models coming on to the market, with ever more features at reasonable prices, makes it very difficult to maintain this page. Digital cameras are also becoming smaller and smaller. This is not necessarily helpful for young children, and schools should think about the users of a camera, and consider:- robustness, the size of buttons, ease of grip etc as well as the technical features. Most digital still cameras will also take small amounts of video film, which can be very usefully inserted into PowerPoint presentations.

Teaching Ideas

Digital images and their manipulation, is becoming an essential skill for teachers. Images can be used very productively and imaginatively in programmes such as these.

Comic Life,  MS Photostory,  Photopeach (www,photopeach.com), Glow

Essential skills for teachers and pupils is to know how to re-size (usually make smaller !) digital images.
